Polk County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Deputies Arrest Suspect in Fatal Hit and Run

On Thursday, September 12, 2013, Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide deputies arrested 40-year-old Christopher John McCoy, DOB 07/31/1973, 5583 Fischer Drive, Lakeland, and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving a Fatality.

At approximately 9:41 pm, on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, 56-year-old Danny Ray Simons, Lakeland, who was wearing a reflective vest and pushing a wheelchair, was crossing the sound bound lanes of South Florida Avenue from the east to the west, near the entrance to the Outback restaurant, 5255 S. Florida Avenue, Lakeland. He was not walking in a crosswalk.

At approximately the same time, just north of the victim, a red, "four-door Honda or Acura," was traveling southbound. Witnesses said the car appeared to be speeding.

The vehicle struck Simmons on the passenger side of the car sending Simmons and the wheelchair several hundred feet to the west after impact. Simmons died at the scene.

The following day, Thursday, September 12th, PCSO Traffic deputies received information that McCoy owned a red Acura and was involved in the incident.

McCoy’s red 2013 Acura was located inside McCoy’s locked garage. The vehicle had damage to the front passenger's side.
