PCSO Conducting Death Investigation - Human Bones Found in Woods in Lakeland

Polk County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are conducting a death investigation in Lakeland today after a Tampa man found human bones in the woods.

Around 8:55 a.m. this morning, Tuesday, September 17, 2013, a witness from Tampa was looking for scrap metal on North Wabash Avenue in Lakeland, between Memorial Blvd and Crutchfield Road, when he found a human skull and some bones.

The witness called PCSO to report the remains.  The scene is located in the woods east of North Wabash Avenue, slightly south of Crutchfield Road.

The bones were taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for examination to hopefully identify the deceased person and determine his or her cause of death.  The bones appear to be those of an adult.

The investigation is ongoing.
