On Thursday, September 29, 2011, Polk County Sheriff’s School Resource deputies, along with the assistance of a PCSO Explorer (Explorers are high school student volunteers), conducted “Operation Pop Top” in an effort to combat the illegal sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors. The operation was conducted in the Winter Haven area of Polk County.
Two stores were checked, with one in compliance with Florida State Statutes:
At the BP gas station, located at 795 Cypress Gardens Blvd. in Winter Haven, the clerk refused to sell alcohol to the minor.
At the CVS store, located at 970 Cypress Gardens Blvd. in Winter Haven, the clerk sold alcohol to the minor. Sharon Nanney, DOB 5/7/1965, of 501 8th Street in Dundee, was arrested and charged with one count Sale of Alcoholic Beverage to a Minor.
"Operation Pop Top is an effective community awareness tool," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "When proprietors see that we will not tolerate the illegal sale of tobacco or alcohol to minors, it sends a message. I commend the businesses which were in compliance."
