Avon Park Youth Academy juvenile detainee charged with battery

17-year-old Austin Moore was arrested late yesterday by Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies at the Avon Park Youth Academy, 242 South Blvd, Avon Park (operated by the G4S company), for battering a staff member (F3), intentionally vandalizing the facility (M2), and for willfully attempting to initiate a riot (F2).

According to the investigation and statements made by Avon Park Youth Academy staff, Moore had been written up by facility staff earlier in the day Wednesday for disobeying instructions. At approximately 8:40 p.m., in the presence of several other juveniles, Moore came into the office area of one of the housing units yelling "turn it up," "turn it up," and turned over a filing cabinet, removed his shirt, wrapped it around his right hand and began punching out one of the office windows. Staff told deputies it appeared Moore was attempting to incite other juveniles to defiance and violence, and also stated that several other juveniles in the housing unit became excited and they had to be later calmed down by staff members.

A female staff member told deputies that Moore charged at her in an aggressive manner and intentionally struck her with his left shoulder causing her head to strike the wall. More is approximately 6'1" tall and 175 pounds. Moore then left the office and entered another room where he began punching out two more windows. Staff said he then left the housing unit, forcefully exiting the main housing unit door causing damage to the door frame. The suspect was then secured by other staff members outside the unit without further incident. Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to conduct an investigation. Moore was later arrested and taken to the Polk County Juvenile Assessment Center and later transferred to the Polk County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Damage associated with Moore's vandalism is estimated at $150 by Avon Park staff. Neither Moore nor the female staff member sustained significant injuries. Moore had been sentenced to the Avon Park facility for 2015 charges of carrying a concealed firearm and petit theft from Jacksonville, Florida.
