Polk County Robbery Detectives Charge Three in Carjacking – Arrest Five More on Drug Charges

Suspects had a combined total of over

200 previous felony and misdemeanor arrests

In the predawn hours of Thursday, December 12, 2013, deputies responded to the area of 3658 Valley Farm Road, Lakeland, after receiving a report of an Armed Carjacking.

The female victim had attended a party with a female by the name of Bridget Yopp, DOB 04/09/1986, 5102 1st Street NW, Lakeland, and Yopp had asked for a ride home.  The victim agreed and as the two were driving in the area of Valley Farm Road, a subject appeared at the intersection of Rustic Court West and Valley Farm Road armed with a rifle.

The suspect pointed the firearm at the two women and ordered the victim out of the victim’s 2009, gray, TSX Acura.  The victim got out as ordered and the suspect got in; however Yopp remained in the vehicle and did not attempt to flee at any time.  The suspect then fled the area with Yopp.  The victim’s cell phone was left in the vehicle.

During the investigation, detectives located Yopp at her residence.  Yopp told detectives, the victim had “sold” her the cell phone.  Yopp allowed detectives into her residence in order to retrieve the phone.   Yopp lifted the mattress in her bedroom to collect the cellphone and detectives observed a glass pipe, and a plastic bag containing what appeared to be methamphetamine underneath.  Detectives also observed “Z” shaped glass pipe with one burned end with what appeared to be methamphetamine residue on the night stand in the bedroom in plain view. There were clear straws consistent with drug paraphernalia on the dresser in plain view.

Based upon the illegal narcotics and property taken from the victim located in the residence a search warrant for the residence was obtained.  During the warrant search, parts of the victim’s phone, clothing, and the victim’s vehicle keys were located.

Detectives also discovered the firearm used during the carjacking which had been placed underneath a shed in the backyard.

Among the items located during the search of the residence were U.S. currency templates, and a copier for reproducing money, and a check printer / steamer.

The shotgun used in the Carjacking was recovered and the victim’s vehicle was also located at the residence.

Besides Yopp, seven other individuals were found at the 1st Street NW residence.  Three of the eight were connected to the armed carjacking, while four others were charged with various drug crimes.

“This investigation demonstrates the strong link between illicit drugs and criminal activity.  We’ve arrested eight people who are maintaining their drug idled lifestyle by stealing from others and committing violent acts like armed carjacking.  Our detectives will continue to investigate the apparent counterfeit currency and other fraud related to the computer and printer.” – Sheriff Grady Judd
