 Bat Found in Bartow Tested Positive for Rabies 


The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Section announced today,
Tuesday, December 4, 2007, that a fourth case of rabies has been confirmed
in Polk County.


On Thursday, November 29, 2007, a bat fell from a tree and onto a student at
the Compass Middle Charter School, 550 East Clower Street, Bartow. Several
students and faculty members were exposed to the animal. The school administration
is working with the Polk County Health Department to compile a
complete list of possible victims exposed.


The bat was sent for testing and confirmed positive for rabies by the State
Laboratory in Tampa.


Any individual that may have been exposed to the bat is urged to first contact
their physician, then the Polk County Health Department at 863.519.8300 as
soon as possible.


Residents are reminded that wild animals are typically fearful of humans.
Please do not attempt to approach any animal that exhibits overly friendly or
aggressive behavior. If you or a family member sees an animal displaying unusual
behavior, please call the PCSO Animal Control Section at 863.499.2600
