PCSO Detectives Charge Man with Attempted Murder

Polk County Sheriff’s detectives arrested Matthew Lankford, DOB
6/1/1982, 6019 Country Walk Lane, Winter Haven, last night at approximately
10:10 pm, Thursday, December 6, 2007, for Attempted
Murder.

Lankford shot Douglas Sheldon, 6013 Country Walk Lane, as Sheldon
was arguing with Lankford’s mother, Robin Kelly, and friend,
Justin Pellegrino about Lankford destroying Sheldon’s Christmas
decorations.

Country Walk Lane is a dead end street. Witnesses said there had
been complaints about speeders in the past.

Sheldon became angry after he attempted to park his vehicle at his residence and
Lankford’s sister, Audra Lankford, drove around him. Sheldon and Audra Lankford argued
over the incident.

Audra phoned her brother, Matthew Lankford, the suspect, and his friend, Justin Pellegrino,
and told them about the altercation. The suspect and Pellegrino came home and on
the way home stopped in front of Douglas Sheldon’s residence, drove into Sheldon’s yard,
and over Sheldon’s Christmas decorations.

Sheldon went to confront the suspect about the damage and argued with the suspect’s
mother, Robin Kelly, and Pellegrino. Witnesses said that the suspect pointed a gun at
Sheldon and fired. Sheldon was hit in the arm and abdomen.
Sheldon was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he is listed in Stable
Condition.
