Dead Raccoon Found in Lakeland Tests Positive For Rabies

Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officers responded to the Fish Hatchery area off Memorial Blvd. in Lakeland at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27, 2007, in response to a raccoon carcass. The officers submitted the carcass to the state lab and the lab results, which were returned to the agency on August 29, 2007, show that the animal tested positive for the rabies virus. According to Animal Control, this is only the second positive rabies test found in the county so far this year.

The raccoon carcass does appear to have come into contact with other animals, possibly dogs. For more information please call the Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Section at 863-499-2600.
