Deputy Sheriff Arrested for Domestic Violence and Battery

A Polk County deputy sheriff was arrested early this morning on charges of domestic violence, aggravated assault, and sexual battery.

Investigation revealed that 55-year-old Jose Aponte, a 5-year veteran of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, got into a verbal and then a physical dispute with his live-in girlfriend of two months at their shared home in Poinciana. According to their statements, Aponte had been drinking on the night of August 20, 2007, and around 11:00 p.m., approached the victim in their bedroom and they engaged in a verbal argument. The argument escalated into domestic violence when Aponte sexually battered her against her will. He also placed her in fear for her life by pointing a gun at her and threatening to kill her.

Aponte was booked into the Polk County Jail today under no bond until his first appearance hearing tomorrow. He has been suspended without pay pending a termination process.
