First Confirmed Positive Rabies Case Found in Lakeland

Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officers responded to the area of Hallamwood Court in Lakeland due to the presence of a raccoon in a residence backyard, Wednesday, July 7, 2010. The officers impounded the raccoon and submitted the raccoon’s carcasses to the state lab to be tested for rabies due to the homeowner’s dog being exposed to the raccoon when the dog attacked the raccoon. The lab results from the State Laboratory, which were returned to the agency on July 9, 2010, confirmed the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus. The resident was advised the raccoon tested positive and the dog would be under quarantine for 180 days.

This is the first confirmed case of rabies in Polk County so far this year.

A communicator message in reference to this raccoon was sent to residents living within a 5-mile radius of Hallamwood Court in Lakeland. For more information please call the Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Section at 863-499-2600.
