VFW Post 2297 of Lakeland will make a formal presentation of a 6x12 trailer they donated to the PCSO K-9 Unit at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at their location, 306 S. Central Avenue in Lakeland.
After Deputy Sheriff Matt Williams and his K-9 partner Diogi were killed in the line of duty on September 28, 2006, VFW Chairman Darrell Oliver contacted Matt’s supervisor, Sgt. Jim Bryan, and asked if they could help. As a result of that conversation, the VFW hosted a benefit steak and lobster dinner on November 4, 2006, raising $1,000. On November 6th they purchased the 6x12 trailer that the K-9 Unit will utilize to transport equipment to and from the PCSO training center. Since then, the trailer has become a part of the PCSO fleet, complete with decals and stripes, to match the truck that pulls it.
Sheriff Grady Judd, and Sgt. Jim Bryan with his K-9 partner, will be on hand to receive commemorative plaques and pose for photographs with VFW Chairman Oliver, and co-chairmen Rudy Conners and Rick Lominack.
Media representatives are encouraged and invited to attend this event. Photo and interview opportunities will be made available.
