“Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies work hard to keep our residents safe,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “This is a reminder of what they face as they do their job.”
At approximately 11:10 pm, on Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputy Stephen Baggett responded to Walt Williams Road area in reference to an unconfirmed emergency.
While in route, deputy Baggett observed a white 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo matching the vehicle which was described in the original call for service. Deputy Baggett initiated a traffic stop on the Monte Carlo.
After speaking to the driver, 29-year-old Jonathan H. Markely, DOB 08/12/1981, 4811 Ron Circle, Lakeland, deputy Baggett determined Markley had a suspended driver’s license. Markley’s passenger was 19-year-old Kerra Cordova, DOB 07/27/1990, Collins Avenue, Lakeland.
When deputy Baggett asked Markley to step out of the vehicle, he observed a torn plastic bag on the driver’s seat and a green leafy substance spread on the driver’s side floor board of the vehicle. After placing Markley under arrest for DWLSR, deputy Baggett searched Markley’s vehicle and discovered a digital scale with a white powdery substance on it in the glove box. Field tests of the powdery substance confirmed it was methamphetamine. Cordova was also arrested and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
While being transported to the Polk County Jail, Markley told deputy Baggett he was going to find out where deputy Baggett lived and come to Baggett’s residence and shoot him. He told deputy Baggett he would hire a friend to “hide in the bushes like a sniper,” and kill deputy Baggett. Deputy Baggett was uninjured, and both subjects were transported to Jail without incident.
Markley is charged with possession of Cannabis Possession of Drug paraphernalia, and Threatening a Public Servant.
