On Thursday, January 28, 2010, Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a crime suppression / interdiction initiative throughout Polk County. Deputies searched for wanted suspects with outstanding warrants, followed up on felons on probation and those out on bail, and made contacts with the public. During this initiative hundreds of community contacts were made and 87 suspects were arrested.
“Our philosophy is to proactively seek out those who commit crime,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “This overnight investigation demonstrates that, with the public’s vigilance and help, we can keep our communities safe and strong.”
Below are a few of the cases were made during this initiative:
Deputies responded to Lake Lowery Road in Haines City to look for a subject wanted in an Auto Theft investigation. Upon arrival, detectives located 26-year-old Richard Powell in the front yard. When detectives attempted to make contact, Powell placed a bag of methamphetamine into his mouth and swallowed it. After swallowing the bag of meth, Powell was taken into custody and immediately transported to the Heart of Florida Hospital in Haines City. After being released from the hospital, Powell was booked into jail.
Detectives with the PCSO Tactical Drug Unit conducted a traffic stop on a silver Mazda at the intersection of Havendale Boulevard and 42nd Street NW, in Winter Haven. Detectives smelled an odor of cannabis coming from inside of the vehicle. The four (4) occupants (Melvin Jiles, Jr., Victor Perry, Jr., a juvenile suspect, and Jarvis Jiles) exited the vehicle and detectives conducted a search. During this search detectives located a loaded .22 magnum revolver under the driver’s seat, a pair of black gloves, and cannabis scattered throughout the vehicle. All four subjects were subsequently arrested for cannabis and/or concealed firearms offenses.
Deputies in the Southeast District conducted an investigation at a residence located at 2519 4th Street Northeast, in Winter Haven. Over 500 grams of cannabis and other assorted prescription pills were located inside. Three (3) subjects (Randall Campbell, Shandrell Turner, and Claude Feron) were arrested at the residence.
High Intensity Drug Task Force, or HIDTA members, with the assistance of West Region Warrants detectives, located Kenneth Odom at a residence located at 1441 Fairbanks Street, in Lakeland. Odom had outstanding warrants for VOP. After being given consent to search the residence, detectives found over 50 grams of MDMA, and over 20 individually packaged baggies of cannabis. Odom was arrested without incident.
HIDTA members also responded to 2810 West 10th Street, in Lakeland, to look for a Louie Ohm. Ohm had an outstanding warrant. Ohm and several of his associates arrived as detectives were at the residence. When detectives attempted to place Ohm under arrest he attempted to flee. Ohm was restrained and a search of Ohm’s pockets produced a bag of methamphetamine, which he was attempting to discard while resisting. Also while at the West 10th Street residence, detectives spoke with Michael Overcast. Overcast attempted to provide detectives with false information. As he was being taken into custody, detectives discovered a semi-auto pistol in Overcast’s front left pocket. Overcast is a convicted felon.
There were 37 suspects arrested on the east side of Polk County, 22 arrested on the west side of Polk County and an additional 29 arrested by PCSO drug detectives.
