Polk County Sheriff’s Office Conducts Suspected DUI Traffic Stop Driver Jumps Off Parkway

Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a suspected impaired driver in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 19, 2011, on the Polk County Parkway between Waring Road and Harden Boulevard. The suspected impaired driver jumped off the Polk Parkway near the overpass and sustained multiple injuries.

At approximately 3:25 a.m., an off duty PCSO deputy observed a vehicle on County Line Road driving erratically and suspected the driver was impaired and reported what was observed. An on duty PCSO deputy responded to the Polk County Parkway between Waring Road and Harden Boulevard in Lakeland and conducted a traffic stop on the reported vehicle which was traveling eastbound on the Polk Parkway. The deputy detected the odor of alcoholic beverages as he approached the vehicle. The driver, 32 year old Troy Crotts, W/M DOB 8-31-1978 of 508 Boger Boulevard N, Lakeland was in the vehicle. Crotts was traveling alone. The deputy removed the keys from the vehicle before he walked back to his patrol car. Removing the keys on a suspected impaired driver is routine safety procedure. As the deputy walked back to his patrol car without warning, Crotts, exited the vehicle on the passenger side and jumped off the Polk Parkway. Crotts fell approximately 25 feet just off the overpass and landed on the access road. Crotts sustained multiple injuries and was transported to the Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a trauma alert. Troy Crotts is in critical condition.

Charges are pending.

Investigation is ongoing.
