Sheriff Grady Judd is pleased to report that the crime rate in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office primary law enforcement response area is down 5.64%. The Polk/PCSO crime rate is nearly one third less (32.34%) than the most recently published Florida state crime rate.
According to the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) statistics, as reported semi-annually and annually to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)[i], there were 655 fewer crimes in 2009 than in 2008 in the Sheriff’s Office primary jurisdiction. There were 12,766 crimes in 2008 as compared to 12,111 crimes in 2009.
“Through proactive crime fighting and crime prevention efforts, and through the diligent and dedicated work of our members in partnership with the community, the overall crime rate in our Polk County jurisdictions are near historically low levels,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “Polk County continues to be a safe place to live, work, raise a family, and visit on vacation. My pledge to the citizens of Polk County for 2010 is that we will continue to work hard, innovate, and provide value to the taxpayer. As a Polk native, I care deeply about this county. I will do everything I can to lead our team of law enforcement professionals in keeping Polk County a great - and safe - place to live.”
According to the UCR comparison, violent crimes were down overall 1.12% in 2009, and non-violent crimes were down 5.67%. Violent crimes include: homicide, forced sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault and battery. Non-violent crimes include burglary, larceny and motor vehicle thefts.
The crime rate is calculated by dividing the jurisdictional population into the total crime volume (per 100 population). For the Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction the crime rate was 3.18 in 2009 compared to 3.37 in 2008, a reduction of 5.64%. This rate continues to be well below the state-wide average crime rate of 4.7[ii]. The Polk/PCSO crime rate is nearly one third less (32.34%) than the state crime rate.
