 Raccoon Tests Positive For Rabies

A raccoon that attacked a dog in the Bartow area has tested positive for rabies.

On Tuesday, December 11, 2007, a raccoon attacked a silky terrier mix belonging to Frank Andrews of 2041 EF Griffin Road in Bartow. Mr. Andrews intervened on his dog’s behalf and was also bitten in the process. Mr. Andrews killed the raccoon and called PCSO Animal Control. Animal Control sent the raccoon’s body to the state lab, and the lab results, which were returned to the agency on December 13, 2007, show that the animal tested positive for the rabies virus.

Mr. Andrews and his dog are being treated for their wounds and rabies exposure. For more information please call the Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Section at 863-499-2600.
