Third Confirmed Positive Rabies Case in Polk County

On Saturday, November 20, 2010, Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Officers responded to the area of Sutton Hills Drive South in Lakeland due to an altercation between a dog and a raccoon. The officers impounded the raccoon and submitted the raccoon’s carcass to the state lab to be tested for rabies due to the dog's exposure to it.

The lab results from the State Laboratory, which were returned to the agency on November 24, 2010, confirmed the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus. The dog's owner was advised the raccoon tested positive.

This is the third confirmed case of rabies in Polk County so far this year.

A communicator message in reference to this raccoon was sent to residents living within a 5-mile radius of Sutton Hills Drive South in Lakeland. For more information please call the Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control Section at 863-499-2600.
