Polk County Sheriff’s Bureau of Special Investigations detectives arrested a Winter Haven man this afternoon after he offered to pay an undercover detective to commit arson on his vehicle for the purpose of collecting insurance money.
According to the affidavit, on January 26, 2007, at 12:50 p.m., David Lee Seymour, DOB 2/16/62, of 509 Sharon Hill Court in Winter Haven, met with an undercover detective at 26th Street NW near Ave V NW in Winter Haven and discussed paying the detective $200 to burn his vehicle. Seymour gave the detective detailed instructions on where his 2001 Dodge pickup truck was located (behind a fenced compound), and how the detective could illegally gain entry into the area. He also gave the detective a $10 down-payment for the deed.
Detectives placed Seymour under arrest subsequent to that conversation, and interviewed him. He stated that he did not have a job, among other personal problems such as being on pre-trial release for a DUI arrest, and that he came up with the idea for doing this to collect an anticipated $8000-$9000 in insurance reimbursement for the burned truck.
Seymour is being charged with Solicitation to Commit Arson, Solicitation to Commit Burglary, and Attempted Burning to Defraud the Insurer.
