Project Safe & Sound

Project Safe & Sound

Sheriff Grady Judd has introduced a new program designed to assist parents/caregivers of special needs family members. “Project Safe and Sound” was developed in partnership with a local mother of a special needs child. Crystle Feran expressed her concerns to PCSO Crime Prevention staff regarding the possible challenges she faces with her 6-year-old daughter. Through those discussions, Ms. Feran’s “Project Safe and Sound” was borne.

About the Program

“Project Safe & Sound” is a voluntary identification program that aids in the safe return of special needs children and adults.

The program is offered free to those who apply. Funding for Project Safe & Sound is provided through partnerships with The GiveWell Community Foundation; McBroom’s Stamps, Awards & Personalized Gifts; and Bomar Trophy Shop, Inc.

Caregivers who wish to participate will be asked to complete an application/authorization form which requires specific information about the child or adult being registered.

PCSO will then enter the information into the “Project Safe & Sound” database, making the information accessible to all Polk County first responders.

After the information is entered, the special needs person will be issued a “Safe & Sound” bracelet, which includes an assigned number. The bracelet also includes emergency contact information engraved on the plate of the bracelet. Should a special needs child or adult wander off and is found, responding law enforcement personnel will be able to contact PCSO and confirm the identity of the individual. First responders will be provided the caregiver’s contact information so that the special needs person can be reunited with their caregiver.
